The Rape of Dinah (As Told By the Sons of Jacob)

Poem (Canso):
Our sister left a merry innocent;
Now humbled, frightened, cowering in pain,
She weeps alone behind your battlement.
Hers sobbing rends our hearts, a bitter rain
That grows our vow of vengeance like spring grain.
No walls or armies, Shchem son of Chamor,
Shall stay our righteous wrath. We are your bane!
No man treats Jacob's daughter like a whore.

Your father comes with gold and blandishment;
With marriage you would wipe away her stain.
With smile and guile we hide our true intent.
"First circumcise yourself," we do explain.
"And all your men, for so doth God ordain.
Then take her to be yours forever more."
You both agree, and happiness we feign.
No man treats Jacob's daughter like a whore.

Hear now the screams that pierce the firmament,
Our vengeance worse than God did promise Cain!
The city that ignored Dinah's torment
Is drenched in blood and all its heroes slain!
Your people cry for mercy, but in vain.
Behold our message writ in flame and gore
To spread as smoke across Canaan's plain:
No man treats Jacob's daughter like a whore.

Behold, oh Prince, what prize your lust did gain-
Your people slain, your treasure spoil of war.
These last words seared forever in your brain:
No man treats Jacob's daughter like a whore.

Epilogue
Oh mighty God, who doth in Heaven reign,
Recall all that Shimon and Levi swore
And teach those who oppress us in your Name
No man treats Zion's daughter like a whore.
